THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE AIR

Think of a packet of chips left open on a humid day—it becomes soft as it absorbs moisture from the air. Stored grain behaves the same way. Every grain naturally exchanges moisture with the surrounding air until it reaches its Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC). GrainVault™ uses the science of grain moisture isotherms to deliver precisely conditioned cool, dry air, guiding the grain toward a safe equilibrium. The result is uniform grain cooling, reduced moisture migration, lower mould and insect activity, and 40–60 days of protected grain storage from a single cooling cycle under normal storage conditions.

CHALLENGES OF CONVENTIONAL STORAGE

Steel silos protect grain from the outside environment—but they cannot control the internal storage climate.

During the day, the sun heats the silo walls. At night, the metal cools rapidly, causing moisture to migrate and condense within the grain mass. This continuous cycle creates localized hot spots where mould, insects, and microbial activity thrive, leading to spoilage, self-heating, unpleasant odours, and irreversible grain quality loss.

Conventional aeration is an effective storage method when the outside air is naturally cool and dry. In many temperate regions, it can successfully reduce grain temperature using ambient air. However, in tropical, subtropical, and arid climates, the ambient air is often too warm, too humid, or both. Under these conditions, aeration alone cannot consistently achieve the safe grain temperatures required for long-term storage.

GrainVault™ solves this challenge with true mechanical grain cooling. Independent of ambient weather conditions, it maintains stable grain temperatures and intelligent moisture control, transforming conventional silos into climate-controlled storage environments that protect grain quality, reduce storage losses, and preserve the value of every tonne.

HOW THE SVALZ GRAINVAULT™ WORKS

Every Svalz Grain Vault features a precision-engineered refrigeration system. Filtered air is cooled and dehumidified, then gently circulated through the grain via existing aeration ducts for uniform temperature and controlled humidity.

The cold, dry air removes heat and moisture layer by layer, creating a “cooling front” until the grain is uniformly cooled. Intelligent controls monitor conditions and adjust automatically, switching to energy-efficient standby once the target temperature is reached.
